摘要 : A major challenge for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) professionals is how to address the learning needs of diverse learners for whom a monolithic, native-normed version of English is no longer always useful or appropriate. Research in Global Englishes (GE) has noted many teachers' resistance to the adoption of a more "plurilithic" orientation. This study explores whether monolithic beliefs can be effectively challenged using practitioner role models. Video clips featuring early-career English teachers from Germany and China modeling a plurilithic orientation were played to pre-service teachers with the same L1 ("near peers") or different L1s ("more distant peers"). Before viewing, participants responded to a questionnaire assessing their beliefs about English. Immediately following viewing, open-ended reactions to the video content were collected. One month later, participants answered the questionnaire again to measure potential changes in belief. After a further 5 months, a small group of participants were interviewed to explore impacts in greater depth. Data indicate that viewing the role models was a positive experience for most participants and was associated with significant increases in plurilithic orientation for near peers, with evidence of enduring impact for some. We interpret these results as support for the use of near peer video modeling as part of efforts to promote ontological clarity about GE in teacher education.

摘要 : To examine the effect of future time perspective on middle school students' study engagement and explore the mediating role of motivation internalization and the moderating role of grit, we conducted a study in several middle schools. Six hundred sixty-four middle school students completed our measures. Results indicated that future time perspective positively predicted study engagement, and motivation internalization mediated the relationship between future time perspective and study engagement. It is also indicated that grit played a significant moderating role between motivation internalization and study engagement, with the effect of motivation internalization being stronger for low-grit students compared to high-grit students. These findings shed light on how to increase study engagement among middle school students.

摘要 : The price of a house is affected by both the subjective and objective factors of the street environment in a neighborhood. However, the relationships between these factors and housing prices are not fully understood. Street view imagery (SVI) has recently emerged as a new data source for housing price studies. The SVI contains both objective and subjective information and can be used to extract objective measurements describing the physical environment and subjective measurements depicting human perceptions. Compared to conventional methods, there is consistency between subjective and objective information extracted from SVIs, and the two types of information are acquired from the perspective of the human visual perceptual system. Therefore, using both objective and subjective information extracted from street view images to study their relationship with housing prices has several advantages. In this study, focusing on the city of Suzhou, China, we extracted subjective perception and objective view indices from SVIs and systematically assessed their effects on housing prices. The global ordinary least squares (OLS) regression model and the local geographically weighted regression (GWR) model were used to model the correlations between these measures and housing prices. The OLS reveals that overall objective measures have stronger explanatory power, and built environment factors have a greater impact on housing prices. GWR shows that subjective factors can explain more variance in housing prices on the local scale and that home buyers care more about the subjective perceptions of the neighborhood's surroundings. The map of the GWR local coefficients demonstrates that the perception indicators have both positive and negative effects on housing prices in different places. In addition, a Monte Carlo test was performed to verify the spatially varying relationships between these measures. Our findings provide important references for urban designers and guide various applications, such as safe neighborhood design and sustainable city planning.

摘要 : Based on the "Production-Living-Ecological Space" evaluation system, we hereby form its functional index and take the results of corresponding functional measurement to analyze the spatial pattern, functional evolution, and coupling characteristics of the "Production-Living-Ecological Space" of the Yangtze Delta Region. The results show that: (1) From the spatial pattern, the production space is mainly distributed in the plain areas. The living space is concentrated in the dense urban areas along the Yangtze River, the East Sea, and the East Jiangsu–Gansu Line. The ecological space is concentrated in mountainous hill areas. (2) From the spatial transformation, production space expands slightly, living space continues to expand, and ecological space shrinks significantly. (3) The functionality of "Production-Living-Ecological Space" exhibits a high level in hilly mountainous areas and a low level in plains, with an overall downward trend. Notably, the core cities within the Yangtze Delta Region have experienced the most significant decline in functionality. (4) The natural environment is the decisive factor for the overall pattern of "Production-Living-Ecological Space", while economic and social development is the core driving force of the evolution of the spatial pattern, and regional integration is the catalyst of the evolution of the spatial pattern. (5) The coupling coordination of "production-ecology" is exceptionally strong, with the living function holding an overwhelmingly dominant position.

摘要 : Medical students are at high risk of psychological subhealth under heavy stress with increasing screen time. This study aimed to explore the association between screen time and depressive symptoms and determine empathy as a mediating factor. In this cross-sectional study, a total of 945 medical students were surveyed, and 924 medical students were ultimately included after standard exclusion criteria. They reported their daily screen time and completed the Chinese version of the Jefferson Scale of Empathy-Student Version (JSE-S) and the Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS). t tests and analysis of variance showed a significant difference in empathy and depressive symptoms by sex, stage, and screen time. The correlation analysis revealed that both affective and cognitive empathy have inverse associations with depressive symptoms. The mediation model confirmed that cognitive empathy played a positive mediating role between screen time and depressive symptoms, reducing the impact of screen time on depressive symptoms. Our study may add empirical evidence to prevent and intervene in depressive symptoms. These findings call for considering controlling screen time and enhancing cognitive empathy as interventions for medical students' depressive symptoms.

摘要 : Purpose Although there have been considerable amounts of research documenting the effects of narcissism on workplace outcomes, studies of the impact of narcissism on job performance have produced inconclusive results. This study aims to provide insight into this issue by using a new model of narcissism, the Narcissistic Admiration and Rivalry Concept model to explore the processes by which narcissism can impact job performance. Design/methodology/approach Two studies (Study 1 with 1, 176 employees and 217 managers cross-sectional data; Study 2 with 209 employees and 39 managers time-lagged data) were conducted and multilevel technique was used to test the research model. Findings Narcissistic rivalry is associated with higher levels of family–work conflict (FWC) and that these effects are magnified when narcissists also have competing demands in the form of expectations to conform to traditional values. Furthermore, this study documents that higher levels of FWC are associated with greater emotional exhaustion and lower job performance. However, narcissistic admiration only has direct effect on job performance. Originality/value This paper not only suggests that narcissism is a previously untested dispositional antecedent for FWC, but it also uses a facet-based approach to examine when and how narcissism impacts job performance.

摘要 : Although functional identifiability represents a key aspect for promoting visual connotation and sustainable usability in historic building groups, there is still no consensus on how to quantitatively describe its identification basis at a large scale. The recent emergence of the potentiality of deep learning and computer vision has provided an alternative to traditional empirical-based judgment, which is limited by its subjective bias and high traversal costs. To address these challenges, this study aims to build a workflow for a visual analysis of function and facade to extract the different contributions that facade elements provide to functional expression. The approach is demonstrated with an experiment on a section of the Chinese Eastern Railway (CER) where large-scale historical buildings images were categorized to identify functions using deep learning, together with activation and substance for visual calculations. First, the dataset aggregated with images of historic buildings along the CER was used to identify functional categories using SE-DenseNet merging channel attention. The results of the model visualized using t-SNE and Grad-CAM were then used to analyze the relationships of facade features across functional categories and differences in elemental feature representation across functional prototypes. The results show the following: (1) SE-Densenet can more efficiently identify building functions from the closely linked facade images of historic building groups, with the average accuracy reaching 85.84%. (2) Urban–rural differences exist not only in the count of spatial distributions among the CER's historic building groups, but also in a significant visual divergence between functions related to urban life and those involved in the military, industry, and railways. (3) Windows and walls occupy areas with more characteristics, but their decorative elements have a higher intensity of features. The findings could enhance the objective understanding and deeper characteristics of the historical building group system, contributing to integrated conservation and characteristic sustainability.

摘要 : Given that cities are complex and evolving adaptive systems facing various crises, evolutionary resilience plays a crucial role in fostering urban sustainable development . However, the concept of evolution has been largely overlooked in cognitive assessments of urban resilience, leaving the relationships among the internal elements of urban evolutionary resilience insufficiently understood. To address this research gap, we introduce the evolutionary perspective to redefine urban resilience, and accordingly we develop a conceptual framework and evaluation model that consider two dimensions: adaptation and adaptability. Subsequently, an empirical assessment is conducted using data from 281 Chinese prefecture-level cities spanning the period from 2000 to 2019. Furthermore, we employ the marginal utility function and spatial exploration algorithm to investigate the adaptation-adaptability relationship within urban evolutionary resilience. Our findings reveal that while the overall evolutionary resilience of Chinese cities has increased by 31.91% over the past two decades, the disparities between cities have significantly widened. Additionally, the trade-off or synergetic relationship between urban adaptation and adaptability varies with the stage of urban development. Furthermore, the spatial distribution of urban agglomerations overlaps significantly with the synergy zones of urban adaptation-adaptability relationships. By providing new insights into the comprehensive and systematic evaluation of urban evolutionary resilience, this study holds the potential to inform policy and practice aimed at fostering the development of resilient cities.

摘要 : Purpose China has proposed two-stage goals of carbon peaking by 2030 and carbon neutralization by 2060. The carbon emission reduction effect of the power industry, especially the thermal power industry, will directly affect the progress of the goal. This paper aims to reveal the spatial-temporal characteristics and influencing factors of carbon emission efficiency of the thermal power industry and proposes policy suggestions for realizing China's carbon peak and carbon neutralization goals. Design/methodology/approach This paper evaluates and compares the carbon emission efficiency of the thermal power industry in 29 provinces and regions in China from 2014 to 2019 based on the three-stage slacks-based measure (SBM) of efficiency in data envelopment analysis (DEA) model of undesired output, excluding the influence of environmental factors and random errors. Findings Empirical results show that during the sample period, the carbon emission efficiency of China's thermal power industry shows a fluctuating upward trend, and the carbon emission efficiency varies greatly among the provincial regions. The carbon emission efficiency of the interregional thermal power industry presents a pattern of "eastern > central > western, " which is consistent with the level of regional economic development. Environmental factors such as economic level and environmental regulation level are conducive to the improvement of carbon emission efficiency of the thermal power industry, but the proportion of thermal power generation and industrial structure is the opposite. Originality/value This paper adopts the three-stage SBM–DEA model of undesired output and takes CO2 as the undesired output to reveal the spatial-temporal characteristics and influencing factors of carbon emission efficiency in China's thermal power industry. The results provide a more comprehensive perspective for regional comparative evaluation and influencing factors of carbon emission efficiency in China's thermal power industry.
